Improving Texas Forensics: Forensic Science Commission Events to Consider Implications of the National Academies of Science report for Texas
Prior to the recent shakeup at the Forensic Science Commission, the commissioners announced the first in a planned series of roundtable discussions on the implications for Texas of a recent report from the National Academies of Science that was critical of weaknesses in the nation’s forensic science systems. Among the NAS recommendations were making forensic labs independent of police agencies, ensuring “rigorous and mandatory certification programs” for forensic analysts in their respective disciplines, and implementing more robust systems of oversight that develop and enforce “strong standards and protocols for analyzing and reporting on evidence.”
